July, 2009 – Steve Denyes is no stranger to the kids music community. With four prior albums combining original music and traditional folk songs with a fresh uplifting vibe, Hullabaloo has received many accolades over the years including four Parents’Choice Awards. High Roller, their fifth album due for release on September 29th, 2009, is yet another jackpot for Denyes and percussionist partner Brendan Kremer, who have been playing together since fifth grade.

With a background in grown up folk music and its history, Steve started writing kids music as an elementary school music teacher. “My favorite days in the classroom were when we would just sit and sing songs together... playing for kids is pure joy. As much energy as I put out, I get it all back and more from the singing, dancing and smiling.”

For High Roller, Denyes once again turned to his folk roots and to channel classic musical influences like Woody Guthrie and Johnny Cash. The album contains traditional folk classics with a fresh feel like “Oh, Susanna!”, “London Bridge”, and “This Land is Your Land”. Listeners will especially enjoy the fresh sound of originals like the title track, brimming with country goodness about a toddler who has hit the big time with his stroller, the “…mom-powered engine…riding on 3.5 inch rims.” and “Princess Bluejeans”, the antidote to the standard fairytale princess imagery and dedicated to his niece. “I just love the idea of a little princess that runs around in jeans and a ponytail playing soccer instead of sitting around in a castle waiting for prince charming” notes Steve.

Based in southern California, the self-proclaimed “farm-fresh, free-range, organic kid-folk music” of Hullabaloo is sublimely feel-good. The smooth acoustic traditional tunes blend perfectly with the upbeat, toe-tapping tracks that balance out the album. Altogether the collection has something for everyone to enjoy and successfully reaches the warm kid in all of us. As Steve says, ”I think kids music should be like your favorite uncle— hip, fun and subtly instructive. I’m always working on
fine-tuning that balance.”
